AMERICA/MEXICO - More than 11 million Mexicans live in extreme poverty

Monday, 19 November 2012

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - There are 11 million (out of a population of about 110 million people) Mexicans who live in extreme poverty. These data are presented in a report recently presented by the Secretary General of the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval). While acknowledging some progress in the field of services to the population in general, in the report problems related to income, nutrition and food prices are highlighted. Low incomes, and the precarious food supply of the population can be attributed largely to the global economic crisis and rising prices. Some progress has been registered for access to drinking water, housing, access to education and health services. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 19/11/2012)
