AFRICA/SUDAN - The Plenary of the Bishops of Sudan and Southern Sudan has been postponed without a date because of tensions between the two Countries

Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of Sudan and South Sudan (who are assembled in the Episcopal Conference, the Sudan Catholic Bishops' Conference-SCBC) have decided to postpone their annual Plenary Assembly because of tensions between the two Countries. In a message sent by the Secretary General of the SCBC makes it known that Cardinal Zubeir Wako, Archbishop of Khartoum and President of the SCBC, have cancelled the Plenary Assembly to be held in Juba (South Sudan) from June 12 to 17. The note adds that the holding of the meeting will depend on political developments.
In the meantime, the tension between the two Countries does not decrease. Southern Sudan has accused the aviation of Khartoum of having bombed several locations in its territory, in particular in the Upper Nile, Unity and Western Bahr el-Ghazal. However, this has not been confirmed by independent sources of southern Sudanese accusations. Both Khartoum and Juba claim to respect the cease-fire imposed by the resolution approved on 4 May by the UN Security Council. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 09/05/2012)
