AFRICA/RWANDA - biogas system for cooking in the orphanage of Muhura

Muhura (Agenzia Fides) - The Muhura orphanage houses 150 orphaned or abandoned children who are taken care of by 4 nuns. Thanks to a project launched by the Movement for the fight against hunger in the world, the center will soon be equipped with a biogas system that can cook with the manure produced by cows owned by the school, along with human waste of the newly built toilets. The surplus of biogas will be used for the production of fertilizer required to cultivate the fields of the center. The initiative is about to start as an experiment in the African orphanage, but has already laid the foundations to expand to an entire community with 200 households and 12 schools of 800 pupils each. In Rwanda families live in one room, with a kitchen that works with wood, bringing great hardship to health, especially children. They have no toilets. Thanks to the same project implemented in the districts of Gicumbi and Gazibo, each family will receive 2 pregnant cows, that will give birth to calves to be distributed to other families, and a digester, in exchange for 5 000 francs per month for 3 years, the same amount which is spent each month for wood or coal. Once the project has been launched it will be able to sustain itself. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 13/2/2012)
