Managua (Agenzia Fides) - The auxiliary Bishop of Managua, His Exc. Mgr. Silvio Baez, said that the Catholic Church will not remain silent before the abuses and illegality that occur in Nicaragua, although priests put their lives at risk. "We will continue to denounce what we consider is injustice, corruption, illegality and violence in this society, although all of this can lead us to death", said the Bishop in his homily during the Sunday Mass celebrated at the Cathedral in Managua.
The auxiliary Bishop, after living "with deep sorrow the brutal murder" of the priest Marlon Ernesto Pupiro Garcia, he urged the authorities to resolve the death of father Pupiro, "exemplary priest, engaged and loved by his people through "truth and justice".
According to Bishop Baez, after the crime many faithful Catholics asked Him and the Archbishop of Managua, Mgr. Leopoldo Brenes, if they think they can continue to exercise their episcopal ministry in the "same way". "The Archbishop and I said yes, we continue, we want to remain faithful to the Lord, the Gospel and the Church", underlined Mgr. Baez.
In his homily he also said that Nicaraguans should oppose and denounce abuses, despite the fear of losing privileges or their life. "The time has come when we must take discipleship seriously and we have to follow Jesus on the path of fidelity to our faith, even at the expense of one’s life", said the Bishop.
Father Pupiro, 40 years old, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church in the town of La Concepcion, in Masaya, was killed last weekend (see Fides 24/8/2011). The police who are investigating the murder, arrested seven people linked to the crime. Another Bishop from Nicaragua, Mgr. Abelardo Mata, said that this week many priests have received death threats, so he has asked them not to go out late at night. "Do not be afraid, father Pupiro’s blood cries to heaven, but it is also blood that is generating courage" said Mgr. Baez at the end of his homily. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 29/08/2011)
