AFRICA/SOMALIA - Somali people continue to flee towards Yemen

Mogadishu (Agenzia Fides) – The number of Somalis fleeing from drought and food insecurity is increasing, taking refuge in Yemen and face the voyage on overcrowded boats and in terrible conditions, often failing even to reach their destination alive. In the past month, more than 3,700 Somali refugees reached the coast of Yemen, recording the highest rate of arrivals throughout the year. This is what is said in a statement released by the United Nations Agency for Refugees, UNHCR. At the same time, the number of Somalis arriving in Mogadishu, the Somali capital is decreasing, 200 a day compared to the previous one thousand last month, or they go to Kenya. Overall the camp in Dadaab, in Kenya, the rate of arrivals, according to UNHCR, has slowed down from 1500 to 1000-1200 people a day. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 27/08/2011)
