AMERICA/BOLIVIA - Cardinal Terrazas launches an appeal in favor of the most needy

Tuesday, 2 August 2011

Santa Cruz (Agenzia Fides) - Cardinal Julio Terrazas Sandoval, Archbishop of Santa Cruz in Bolivia, said that the threats and repression are not the ways to combat social deprivation and asked to share and distribute wealth equally among those most in need.
In a note sent to Fides said that Cardinal Terrazas raised the alarm concerning the large number of families that have nothing to eat and wait for the crumbs from those who have something more in order to get a piece of bread.
The cardinal stressed that power should not be conceived as a way to accumulate wealth, but rather the contrary, it should focus on how to feed the poor. In this context, he pointed out that poverty in Bolivia forces the needy to commit some form of crime for necessity.
"Wherever there is pain and suffering, there is so much poverty, hunger, and sometimes the solution to have something to eat may be to steal, a crime that derives from the need to eat. We must do something, we must reach the heart of our neighborhoods", said the cardinal. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 02/08/2011)
