AMERICA/MEXICO-A double march along the path of migrants to sensitize the civil community

Wednesday, 20 July 2011

Veracruz (Fides Service) - A march that traces the journey made by migrants in southern Mexico to reach the United States: this is what is being organized to sensitize the authorities and citizens during the visit to Mexico of the spokesman of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, scheduled from July 25 to August 2. Civil society groups, NGOs and activists, led by the priest and human rights defender, Fr. Alejandro Solalinde Guerra, will march on foot from Chiapas to Coatzacoalcos, in Veracruz.
The priest, a member of the Pastoral Care of Human Mobility of the Catholic Church, said that this march has been organized because "there are still kidnappings of migrants, but now occur more secretly, leaving no witnesses, no trace, they just make them disappear ". In the note sent to Fides, the priest observes that two of the routes used by migrants leave from Chiapas: one passes through Tabasco, Veracruz, and arrives in Tamaulipas ; the other leaves from Chiapas, arrives at Ixtepec in Oaxaca, and then heads towards Puebla, and continues to the north.
In statements made to the local press, father Solalinde said: "Veracruz is the land of Los Zetas, there migrants are kidnapped, and then they are brought throughout the Republic. They have no laws, they have already recruited the local population (.. ..) This recruitment has become a huge threat for families, for the Mexican people, and immigrants ". He added that this situation "is daily bread" and to block this situation "a decisive intervention on behalf of civil society is needed".
The march will trace the two paths of migrants: one will go to the community of El Naranjo, located in the municipality of Palenque, Chiapas, which will continue to Tenosique, Tabasco, and will arrive in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. The other will start from Tapachula, Chiapas, through Ixtepec, in Oaxaca, and will arrive in Coatzacoalcos. (EC) (Agenzia Fides 20/07/2011)
