Rio de Janeiro (Fides Service) - "The Continental Mission in a perspective of communication" was the theme of the conference given by His Exc. Mgr. Guillermo Ortiz Mondragón, Bishop of the Diocese of Cuautitlán in Mexico, during the Seminar on Communication for the Bishops of Brazil (see Fides 18/7/2011). According to the note sent by the Episcopal Conference of Brazil to Fides, the event brought together 70 Bishops in Rio de Janeiro (RJ),from July 12 to 17, and was promoted by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, the Episcopal Conference of Catholic Brazilian Bishops and the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro.
Mgr. Guillermo Ortiz argued that communication goes beyond simple information. "We make a bad mistake when we limit ourselves to information", the Bishop underlined, emphasizing the need for a "communication-dialogue": "dialogue presupposes expression, listening, clarifying, understanding, deciding".
According to the Bishop of Mexico, the Continental Mission, proposed by the Fifth Conference of the Latin American Episcopate and the Caribbean, held in 2007 in Aparecida (SP), is an event that is part of a communicative act "that calls us to be communicators to arouse in everyone, both the lay faithful, consecrated faithful, and ordained minister, the ability to communicate with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit to give us life".
Mgr. Ortiz believes it is important to use media for the mission: " Media can build, create networks and facilitate dialogue of communion, reconciliation and peace. They are, from this point of view, the instruments of evangelization and the promotion of the Kingdom". (EC) (Agenzia Fides 07/19/2011)
