Monday, 30 May 2011

Abyei (Agenzia Fides) - The Northern Sudan troops have occupied Abyei since May 21 and have once again burned several houses of the inhabitants fled before the offensive military. The complaint comes from Mgr.Roko Taban Mousa, Apostolic Administrator of Malakal in southern Sudan to Fides: "Several houses have been ransacked and then in flames. In this way a new situation on the ground wants to be created, trying to make it impossible for the local population to return to Abyei. This is a serious violation to humanitarian law. Khartoum's army does not seem willing to leave the area. "Several thousand people have fled from Abyei area and they have been without assistance for several days.
"So far, the humanitarian situation has not improved - the Apostolic Administrator of Malakal told Fides- because the UN food reserves in the area have been ransacked by the army in the north. There are some people of good will in some areas of southern Sudan who put together some 'supplies and go to the places where the displaced have gathered, but other than that, the refugees are without any assistance while the rain continues to beat the 'area where the refugees are. "(L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 05/30/2011)
