AMERICA/PARAGUAY-Alarm concerning the low number of vaccinations among the population

Saturday, 28 May 2011

Asuncion (Agenzia Fides) - 50% of the Paraguayan population is at risk of influenza and pneumococcal disease even though the Ministry of Health has proposed to increase levels of immunization coverage for the weaker people, ranging from pregnant mothers to parents of children between 6 and 35 months of age. The immunization campaign will be extended to supermarkets, churches and centers of the Central Department. According to the program manager, currently the regular coverage is 1% less than that recorded in the same period last year. Around 100 people in charge of vaccinations are currently involved in Capiatá City, San Lorenzo, Lamb, Fernando de la Mora and Luque, where there is a high population density. The regions with currently the lowest rate of coverage are Central, Asunción, Caaguazú, Itapua and Alto Parana. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 05/28/2011)
