AMERICA/ECUADOR-"Building a Church in the midst of this world, close to the suffering of the poor": say the Bishops after the meeting of the Episcopal Conference meeting

Quito (Agenzia Fides) - From May 2 to 6, in the second week of Easter according to tradition, the members of the Episcopal Conference of Ecuador met in Quito. According to the final statement of the meeting, received by Fides, in a fraternal atmosphere of participation, the Episcopal Conference evaluated the role of exchange of pastoral experiences and definition of joint actions between the various dioceses. The Bishops also elected the new President and partly renewed the Commission as expected in the Statutes. Mgr. Antonio Arregui Yarza, Archbishop of Guayaquil was elected President of the Episcopal Conference; Luis Cabrera Herrera, OFM, Archbishop of Cuenca was elected Vice President; Mgr. Angel Polivio Sanchez Loaiza, Bishop of Guaranda and Bishop of the Vicariate Apostolic Delegate of Sucumbíos was elected secretary. The new Presidency and the various Episcopal Commissions confirmed their commitment to work at the service of the pilgram God's people in Ecuador, faithful to the Gospel of Jesus and always careful towards the needs of his Church.
The Assembly examined the pastoral work of the three years just finished, taking into consideration the pastoral commitment, the results obtained and the intense life that manifests itself in different pastoral areas. "However, the complex and changing world in which we live - the statement continues - for the Church is a challenge that requires us to live in a state of constant conversion and renewal, disciples and missionaries of Jesus. Together with Him we try to find new ways of listening and service, in the light of the Word. "
The statement, signed by the General Secretary of the Episcopal Conference of Ecuador, concludes: "We ask Jesus to bring his people forward and continue to support us in this effort, loyalty and commitment to build a Church in the midst of this world , close to the suffering of the poor, and at the same time ferment of faith and hope for all. We also ask, in such an important period for the country's future, to know how to illuminate the conscience of all citizens so that, the faithful fulfill their family, social and political duties, to always seek justice, freedom and the common good .
