Rumbek (Agenzia Fides) - The diocese of Rumbek launched on Sunday 1 May, a program of prayer titled "Ten Steps to Unity in Southern Sudan. " It is about ten weeks of prayer which will end on July 9, with the celebration for the independence of South Sudan.
The Bishop of Rumbek, Monsignor Cesare Mazzolari, explained to Radio Good News that the program is traced along the lines of the "101 days of prayer" that preceded the referendum of Southern Sudan, making it clear that "Ten Steps" are the 10 Sundays from May 1 to July 9.
For each of the ten Sundays a spiritual theme is preposed to prepare the people to take part in building their new nation. Monsignor Mazzolari underlined the two major program activities: prayer, catechesis and spiritual and civic obligations. Mgr. Mazzolari added that groups of discussion will be created to reflect on the twelve themes from the Social Doctrine of the Church. The Bishop has proposed the recitation of the Rosary prayer during the campaign and especially during the month of May.
The ten themes, and relevant sermons prepared by Fr. Bernard Mallia, are: forgiveness, solidarity, leadership for peace, common good, healing and reconciliation, rights and responsibilities; "you will do things bigger than me ", subsidiarity, people and respect for authority, work and building together .
The twelve themes for reflection and discussion, taken from the Social Doctrine of the Church are: human dignity, rights and responsibilities, common good, solidarity, preferential option for the poor, integral development, help, participation; justice; peace; reconciliation; integrity of creation.
