AFRICA/SUDAN-A seminar has been evacuated in southern Sudan due to inter-community clashes

Friday, 29 April 2011

Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) - The seminarians of the Minor Seminary of the Diocese of Mapuordit Rumbek (South Sudan) were moved to Yirol for safety reasons, says the Sudan Catholic Radio Network site. Since March the town of Mapuordit has been the scene of violent inter-tribal clashes between farmers and pastoral communities. The last clash, which occurred on Easter Sunday, caused two deaths.
The Nursing School of Rumbek was forced to delay the arrival of new students and has closed the Mapuordit Camp until security is guaranteed. The Governor of the State of the Lakes, Chol Mayay Tong, assured Mgr Caesar Mazzolari, Bishop of Rumbek, that more troops to the area will be sent to ensure safety. Two weeks ago the Governor Tong met with the Governor of Western Equatoria, Bangassi Joseph Mario Bakosoro, and decided to create a buffer zone between the two communities by sending about 500 security personnel.
