AMERICA/NICARAGUA - “Corruption is one of the most hazardous problems to democracy”: Bishop Baez at the conclusion of the Stations of the Cross

Monday, 11 April 2011

Managua (Agenzia Fides) – The Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Managua, Bishop Silvio Baez, denounces corruption as one of the most hazardous problems to democracy in the Country, commenting on the report by the US State Department 2010 on human rights in the Central American Country. On the local channel 12, the Bishop declared: “Unfortunately in recent years corruption has risen in all areas of the State.” This report highlights that “the judicial system in Nicaragua continued in 2010 to be susceptible to corruption and politicisation, and it did not function independently.” The Country is still without “an effective system of civil rights.”
“I believe that one of the commitments that Nicaraguans must make in the future is to rise above corruption with greater efforts in the areas of honesty and patriotism,” said the Bishop.
Bishop Baez spoke at the end of the Stations of the Cross which is traditionally held every Saturday throughout Lent in different pastoral areas in the Archdiocese of Managua, reaching the Shrine of Jesus “de El Rescate” in the city of Conquista, in the south of the Country. The Government of Nicaragua, led by President Daniel Ortega, has not responded yet to the document from Washington. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 11/04/2011)
