AMERICA/BOLIVIA - Catholic initiative: pro-environment and respectful of Creation

Saturday, 9 April 2011

La Paz (Agenzia Fides) – The Franciscan 'Justice and Peace' Movement of the Basilica of St Francis in the city of La Paz, is busy making preparations for the celebration on the last Saturday of the month at 7.00 am in the Basilica. This celebration has the goal of creating awareness about the destruction of nature. “We are not really aware of the damage we are doing to the environment. Currently this damage is resulting in terrible situations like the landslides which occurred in our City, and earthquakes.... This is nature's answer to what we do against her,” he told the Guardian in San Francisco, via Carmelo Galdós.
The statement sent to Fides, also reads: “As Christians, we must thank God for his Creation, to take the disaster seriously that we are causing and act responsibly.”
In Latin America there are several initiatives that aim to protect the environment and also campaigns to create awareness of the seriousness of human action against nature, such as the pastoral care plans of the various dioceses and Bishops' Conferences that are trying to program these types of activities continuously.
