Saturday, 26 March 2011

Islamabad (Agenzia Fides) – The Minister of the Interior Rehman Malik announced with satisfaction the Pakistani Government's success in identifying the perpetrators and instigators of the murder of Benazir Bhutto, the political leader and former Prime Minister killed in 2007, stating that details of the investigation will soon to be released. The Christian community in Pakistan welcomes the news with satisfaction but insists that “now it is important to make the same commitment to not let the murderers of Minister Shahbaz Bhatti go unpunished,” says Paul Bhatti, the Minister's brother and new “Special Advisor” for religious minorities to Fides (see Fides 24/03/2011).
The newly appointed Special Adviser recently met with Minister Malik, who, says Bhatti, “assured me of his commitment to capturing the killers. He also clarified that the false trails will be abandoned and that the investigation will focus on Islamic fundamentalists.”
Yesterday Paul Bhatti had a meeting with the Minister for Information and Telecommunications, Firdous Ashiq Awan, who congratulated Bhatti on his new position, ensuring him of the Government's support for Bhatti's mission to protect minorities, to protect their rights and promote social harmony throgughout the Country. Bhatti, also a Catholic, told Fides that he “accepted the federal executive office to give new hope to religious minorities in Pakistan.... Although the phenomenon of fanaticism is rampant and it will take time to defeat, we are ready to hold the memory of Shahbaz aloft and promote inter-religious unity and harmony for the good of the Country,” he concludes.
