AFRICA/KENYA - One hundred years of Women's Day: in Kenya thousands of women live in acute poverty, without rights

Wednesday, 2 March 2011

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) – In view of the upcoming International Day for Women (IDW), on 8 March, the Association of Sisterhoods of Kenya's Justice and Peace Commission (AOSK-JPC), organised a series of events for the promotion of women. The theme this year for the Day is “Equality of access to education, training, science and technology: Path to dignified work for women.” According to the AOSK-JPC, in Kenya there are thousands of women living in a state of acute poverty, have no adequate food nor shelter, education or training. The AOSK-JPC believes that there are many reasons for this celebration and that men and women should recognise that to ensure peace and social progress and full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms requires the active participation, the equality and development of women. The organisation also said that men and women should take this opportunity to unite and mobilise one another towards significant change. The International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time on 8 March 1911. More than one million women and men took part in the campaigns organised for the Day, for the rights of women regarding employment, voting, education and public office.
