AMERICA/MEXICO - “To try and defend the truth, a benefit to all”: the Bishop of Oaxaca appeals to civil leaders

Wednesday, 23 February 2011

Oaxaca (Agenzia Fides) – “Once again the violent events of this week say loudly that some do not want the good of society, some do not want to join together and promote Oaxaca, and some do not want the truth and the corruption to be discovered. Society needs to know the truth about these acts of violence to discover who supported it and who is to blame. Both the Government and teachers require the support of society, but only with justice, in unity and with the target of the common good. It's no good asking for the truth and then remaining indifferent to those who seek to support and defend it. It would be a shame to hide the corruption and violence with impunity.” So writes the Archbishop of Antequera-Oaxaca, Archbishop José Luis Chávez Botello, referring to the clashes last week that also damaged the Cathedral.
Vandalism and disrespect for cultural heritage have left a nasty mark on many historic buildings, the very ones that gave World Cultural Heritage recognition to Antequera in 1986. Damage to the walls, written in paint, broken windows and walls, are some of the battle signs from last week, fought out between the teachers of Section 22 and the federal police in the heart of the capital city of Oaxaca.
“The situation is difficult to understand, but there is hope if the society of Oaxaca, the Government and the teachers, will each take responsibility,” said Archbishop Chávez Botello. “We ask and hope that soon an investigation will be opened and conducted with transparency. Then when the results are released firm and constructive positions may be taken. Seeking and defending the truth is to the benefit of all: teachers, students and parents, the authorities, and especially the society. The truth is an indispensable foundation for credibility and unity. It is the best weapon against corruption. 'The truth shall make you free' (Jn 8:32).”
The message of Archbishop Chávez Botello was sent to Fides by the Episcopal Conference of Mexico. According to local press, the situation has degenerated because of the privatisation policies for education proposed by President Felipe Calderón, which resulted in the mobilisation of the teachers of Oaxaca grouped in Section 22.
