VATICAN - The relevance of St Paul for the life of the Church in her mission of evangelisation

Friday, 18 February 2011

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Pauline Year was “like a strategic moment in the life of the Church. It was strategic because it helped to bring to light not only the many-sided richness of thought by the Apostle of the People with an enviable bibliographical and theological production - probably never achieved in the past - but also showed his relevance in the life of the Church in her mission of evangelisation.” This was underlined by Bishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation, speaking in the press office of the Holy See at the presentation of the assessment of the Pauline Year (28 June 2008-29 June 2009), during which the book “L’Anno Paolino” (The Pauline Year) by Graziano Motta was presented. Bishop Fisichella also recalled that in St Paul's Basilica, on 28 June, 2010, at First Vespers for the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul, Pope Benedict XVI expressed his intention to set up the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelisation: “He wanted to carry this out in the basilica, already rich in its ecumenical significance, to show how Paul's example should inspire, invigorate and strengthen the spirit of Christians' missionary work.”
Dr Gianfranco Marcelli, Vice Director and Chief Editor of the Rome daily “Avvenire”, stressed that there is always, for the commentator, “the danger of losing sight of the overall depth of the event that you are involved in,” while the book dedicated to the Pauline Year offers a unique opportunity to “summarise” what happened, “not only throughout those 12 months, but also before then, and perhaps especially, during the months following the solemn closing ceremony in St Paul's Basilica, to jump ahead to today. The overall picture that emerges from these pages is that of an impressive event for its depth, for its capacity to involve and for the number of people who were involved.”
The press conference was also attended by Cardinal Andrea Cordero Lanza of Montezemolo, the creator and tireless organiser of the event, Archpriest Emeritus of the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, and by Cardinal Francesco Monterisi, the current Archpriest of the Basilica.
