ASIA/PHILIPPINES - Archbishop of Cebu: “Catholic lay people, protagonists in pro-life demonstrations”

Thursday, 10 February 2011

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – “We trust in the laity, in their work and commitment, to oppose the laws that promote abortion, euthanasia, and anti-life population control policies,” said Archbishop Josè Palma of Cebu and Vice President of the Episcopal Conference, in Rome for their ad limina visit.
The Archbishop said that the Episcopal Conference of the Philippines has for some time expressed its disapproval towards the “Document on Reproductive Health”, even on the latest modified version, renamed, “Document on Responsible Parenthood”. The Bishops expressed their critical stance in a pastoral letter, while pro-life groups launched an awareness campaign and a petition to ask Congress to not approve the document (see Fides 2/2/2011).
Archbishop Palma said to Fides: “With catechesis and all our means we wish to confirm the immorality of this anti-life document. We call the lay faithful to continue to resist these immoral teachings and to show their disapproval through programs of awareness throughout the Philippines.”
A massive demonstration has been announced for Manila tomorrow, 13 February, organised by the “Coalition for the Family”, which brings together various Filipino pro-life movements. Demonstrators, to the cry of “Unite for Life”, call members of Congress to vote against the document. Alongside the Catholic groups, sharing our commitment, are Christians of other denominations and Muslims, say the organisers.
A grand “March for Life”, involving all Catholic schools, is planned for 26 March. The initiative is promoted by the diocese of San Pablo and supported by the Knights of Colombus and will extend to many dioceses. The protesters will pray with these words: “Lord, loving Father, Creator of Life, give us the strength and the courage to defend and protect human life from conception to its natural end. We pray that all legislators may be guided by your Grace”. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 10/2/2011)
