AMERICA/MEXICO - Do not accept “drug-handouts” asks the Apostolic Nuncio in Mexico

Thursday, 3 February 2011

Oaxaca (Agenzia Fides) – The violations of human rights suffered by Central American migrants in Mexico on their way to the border with the United States “is outrageous,” said the Apostolic Nuncio in Mexico, Archbishop Christophe Pierre. At the same time he invited the Catholic community to act with transparency and honesty and not to accept the so-called “narcolimosnas” (drug-handouts) for short-term maintenance.
Interviewed by journalists after the inauguration of the Community Development Centre, “Our Lady of Guadalupe”, by the local press, along with the Governor of Oaxaca, Gabino Cue Monteagudo, the Nuncio said that attacks against Central American immigrants violate human dignity, offending people, and represent a wake-up call for society, which should pay attention to this phenomenon and find a solution.
“This problem has taken on an international dimension because at its source is poverty, but we need to involve all society in a way that focuses on the person,” the Archbishop said, emphasising that the Catholic Church is present in the Mexican reality to stand by the people and find a solution to all these political and social problems. Finally, Archbishop Pierre asked the members of the Catholic Church to not make pacts with drug traffickers, because they exist on exploitation. “It is not permissible to receive “drug-handouts”. We need to be always vigilant and live honestly and transparently.” said the Nuncio. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 03/02/2011)
