EUROPE/SPAIN - Multi Festival David 2004: a Christian encounter of modern music and art “to translate the Gospel into the language of music”

Oviedo (Fides Service) - "Generation Hope" is the slogan of the 19th Multi Festival David 2004 which opened on 8 July in the Spanish town of Los Cabos and will close on Sunday 11. The first Multi Festival David was first held in Toledo in 1986 at the initiative of singer and composer Luis Alfredo Díaz whose aim was to encourage dialogue between word, reflection, Christian commitment and culture. In these 19 years the initiative has been held in various parts of Spain making known Christian musicians and artists. Mr Diaz describes the event as "a Christian encounter of modern music and art " open to people of all ages which aims to "help Christians to be present in the world and to share with the world the beauty inspired by the Spirit", Archbishop Carlos Osoro, Archbishop of Oviedo, wrote in a letter of Invitation to the event. Multi Festival David is also international: this year Porto Rico will hold its 3rd Multi Festival David, and Miami and Uruguay are at their 2nd edition. 1st editions of Multi Festival David will be held in Mexico at Guadalajara and Merida, in Germany in Cologne, in the USA at Sacramento and in Peru in Lima.
Multi Festival David activities include: prayer school, art exhibitions, concerts of religious music and songs, discussion groups, meetings seminars, conferences, presentation of the activity of NGOs, movements and communities. There will also be a Multi Festival David for children under 10 and a “David Junior” for adolescents 11 to 17, with trained personnel to organise games, activities of animation, excursions, and walks for various age groups.
Multi Festival David opens with a daily Mass followed by the school of prayer. There is also daily exposition of the Blessed sacrament for Adoration. On Saturday 10 July there will be a prayer vigil at midnight after the last concert. On Sunday at 11am there will be a special Mass in Oviedo Cathedral, presided by Archbishop Carlos Osoro. More than 2000 people are involved in Multi Festival David as well as some 25 artists from 18 different countries all committed to a common mission to translate the Gospel in the language of music” (RG) (Agenzia Fides 9/7/2004 - Righe 25; Parole 361).
