ASIA/PHILIPPINES - In Manila, a new house for disabled children, to enhance their capabilities

Quezon City (Agenzia Fides) - The Guanella Home for Special Children, a simple house with a familial environment designed to accommodate about twenty children with mental and physical disabilities, was inaugurated on 12 December by the Guanellians in the area of the Tandanga Sora, Quezon City. Since 1996 a small group of disabled children have found welcome and care in places adjacent to the chapel and added to the formation house. The new facility is located within the same area of about two hectares, where, since 1993, the Motherhouse of the Guanellians in the Philippines, the Centre for Training and the Guanella Centre have stood, all designed as “open tents of Charity” where the many poor in the neighbourhood receive attention, listening, daily services of educational assistance, medical care, rehabilitation, nutritional support, social assistance, formation in Christian values, involvement in the network of solidarity and in a series of activities to promote the integral human, seeking to restore hope to those in need, rediscovering and enhancing the skills and resources of each.
It is a bright and functional building: on one floor, fully accessible, with a large area for the reception, the coordinator's office, the infirmary and space for physical rehabilitation, the kitchen, refectory , a multi-purpose hall for recreational, social and religious activities, two dormitories with adequate bathrooms and toilets, a room for the coordinator and one room for the night staff, a laundry, and a spacious room for work activities and occupational therapy. The boys are divided into two groups: twelve are between 5 and 15 years, while 8 are older. The management and organization of the house is managed by a Guanellian team of two teachers, a social worker, kitchen and laundry staff and a group of volunteers. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 20/12/2010)
