AFRICA/KENYA - A radio station promotes AIDS initiative for young freelance journalists

Saturday, 18 December 2010

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW), the global radio station, has just launched a new competition to Nairobi via the web to create greater awareness about the impact of HIV and AIDS on children infected and affected by the disease in Kenya and the world at large. In the African country it is estimated that there are about 180,000 children under 14 years old who are infected with the HIV virus. The idea of creating a website with a blog on children orphaned by HIV occurred in mid-November. “I CARE: my blog, their voice”, is open to journalists and social workers with the aim of reaching more and more young people. It will be full of personal and professional stories, photographs and videos, and at the end of the competition the top five bloggers will be awarded prizes. RNW initiated the drafting in Africa in 2009 and has a network of about 25 young freelance journalists in 20 African countries. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 18/12/2010)
