Monday, 15 November 2010

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - After almost 11 months after the greatest tragedy that the island has seen and that according to the official estimate has caused 230,000 deaths, the epidemic of cholera now threatens some 200,000 inhabitants, says the United Nations. It is a very critical situation that is being practically overlooked by the international community. For this reason the Holy Father Benedict XVI launched an appeal at yesterday's Angelus, appealing to the international community "to generously help those people."
Even the United Nations has made a distress call to the international community, asking them to raise $163 million to fight cholera in Haiti. A spokeswoman for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Elisabeth Byrs, said during a press conference in Geneva, November 12: "We absolutely need this money as soon as possible to avoid being overwhelmed by this epidemic." The UN has reported that five of the ten departments of Haiti is affected by the epidemic. That implies that at least "200,000 people have symptoms of cholera, diarrhea, and dehydration,"said a statement released November 12. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 15/11/2010)
