Thursday, 11 November 2010

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – On Sunday, October 31, the Cathedral Church of the Immaculate Conception hosted the ordination of Bishop John Baptist Li Suguang as Coadjutor Bishop of Nanchang in the Jiangxi Province (Mainland China). He belongs to the diocesan clergy. He is 46 years old and has been a priest for 18 years. He was approved by the Holy See for the office of Coadjutor Bishop of Nanchang. The Chinese authorities have approved his ordination.
The solemn liturgy was celebrated by Archbishop Joseph Li Shan of Beijing, who was a classmate of the new Bishop, along with Bishop Joseph Zhao Fengchang of Yanggu/Liaocheng and Bishop Joseph Shen Bin of Haimen. Also present was the 89-year-old Archbishop of Nanchang, Archbishop John Wu Shizhen. All these bishops are in communion with the Holy Father and recognized by the government. The ceremony was attended by more than a thousand faithful, including members of the non-official community, and several priests from neighboring provinces.
Bishop Li was born in 1964 into a Catholic family in Changzi, in Shanxi. In 1987, he entered the local diocesan seminary and later, that of Beijing. He was ordained on August 22, 1992. After his ordination, he worked for three years in Shuozhou, later in Inner Mongolia, and finally, in the ecclesiastical circumscription of Nanchang, first as pastor of two large parishes and, since 1999, as Vicar General.
The Archdiocese of Nanchang currently has about 100,000 faithful. There are about eighty priests and some thirty religious. Bishop Li said he was inspired by the great missionary Father Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), who introduced Christianity in Jiangxi. To accelerate the development of the local church he will promote, in the first place, evangelization and the formation of priests and laity.
The diocesan community places Bishop Li under the maternal protection of the Virgin Mary and everyone hopes that he can carry out the pastoral ministry that the Church has entrusted to him in Nanchang with dedication and love. (Agenzia Fides 11/11/2010)
