ASIA/PAKISTAN - "Typhus, cholera, malaria, hemorrhagic fever, eye infections, and skin diseases...we are in urgent need of medicine to face the epidemics”: appeal from Fr. Waseem

Ibang (Agenzia Fides) – In Pakistan, the situation remains critical. The biggest problems are health concerns. There are many people suffering from intestinal infections, typhoid, cholera, malaria, hemorrhagic fever, eye infections, and skin diseases. Below is a note from Camillian Fr. Waseem Walter, MI, pastor of the parish of Ibang, most of which has been affected by the floods: "Thanks to donations obtained through the Foundation for Human Promotion and Health, PRO.SA, a non-profit NGO, we can continue our health intervention in the medical field, trying to cover the needs of the entire district of Jhang Sadar. So far, we have assisted 935 people through the distribution of food, water, and basic necessities; vaccinated 315 people against cholera, treated 700 patients suffering from intestinal infections; vaccinated 250 people against typhoid; treated 510 patients with skin problems or eye infections; and treated hundreds and hundreds of people, mostly children, suffering from hemorrhagic fever. The poor people continue to suffer and the aid that comes from foreign governments and UN agencies often goes towards people that do not really need it. Some areas, in fact, have not yet been reached. We are desperately in need of buying medicines and vaccines to prevent epidemics. The flood has passed and people are trying to return home or to what has remained of their homes." (AP) (Agenzia Fides 21/10/2010)
