Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) – The month of the missions in Mexico is widely celebrated by the entire Catholic community. The Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) have organized a full calendar of events in various dioceses of the country, as reported by the Director of the PMS in Mexico, Father Guillermo Morales Martinez, to Fides. Every diocese is preparing especially for World Mission Sunday.
The PMS have also organized, at the national level, the Missionary Congress to be held in Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, October 21 to 24, where they expect 4,000 participants from all over the country. These type of Missionary Congresses have been held every five years by the PMS, since 1942. The Congress this year, 2010, will be the fourteenth. For this occasion, they have prepared a special workbook with 5 themes to be studied before the Congress.
In the dioceses, the PMS have also organized conferences, retreats, diocesan congresses, Missionary Rosaries, hours of adoration, etc., to stimulate missionary awareness among the faithful. In the Diocese of Nuevo Laredo, for example, a congress was organized with 1,000 children of the Holy Childhood Association. In 91 dioceses in the country, there have been a total of 25,000 catechetical meetings on missionary topics, with a presentation of statistics, recitation of the Missionary Rosary, and information on the work of the PMS.
In particular, this year 30,000 DVDs have been released with missionary images and photos used to present the Pope's Message for WMS. Also, 60,000 posters were printed throughout the country, many visits were made to Catholic schools, groups of children and adolescents, young people and adults. Aware of their missionary commitment, they have also organized events to promote Mission Sunday throughout Mexico. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 11/10/2010)
