EUROPE/POLAND - Current challenges for the mission in Poland, 20 years after Redemptoris Missio

Thursday, 7 October 2010

Warsaw (Agenzia Fides) – The National Office of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) of Poland held a three-day meeting, September 27 to 29, to reflect on the theme "The Mission - The Witness of Love and Communion,” in preparation for October, the Month of the Missions, and World Mission Sunday. The National Director of the PMS, Msgr. Jan Piotrowski, in conveying the news of the event to Fides, writes: "Our missiological reflection focused on the encyclical Redemptoris Missio by John Paul II, 20 years after its publication. Professor Jan Górski presented the current challenges that the Church faces in our country, based on this document.
"The practice of missionary renewal of a local Church" was the theme illustrated by Fr. Jiri Sleger, National Director of PMS in the Czech Republic. Also, "The relationship between the new evangelization and the mission ad gentes" was illustrated by Fr. Stefan Moszoro-Dabrowski, of Opus Dei, who was born in Argentina but has lived in Poland for the last 20 years. The last conference was that of Father Adam Schulz, SJ, on the “missionary potential” of apostolic movements in Poland. Among these initiatives is also the Living Rosary, which involves around 1,110 members.
"The meeting was enriched thanks to the contributions of the group workshops - said Msgr. Piotrowski - where the diocesan directors of the PMS, the laity, and religious offered good ideas to motivate and stimulate cooperation in the mission in our country. The presence of Bishop Wiktor Skworc, President of the Bishops' Commission for Missions, offered a contribution of motivation and challenge to our work. The program also included the presentation of material for World Mission Sunday 2010, material for working with children in the 2010/2011 school year, and the dates of the national meetings until June 2011."
Finally, Msgr. Jan Piotrowski, upon reaching the end of his second term as National Director of the PMS, thanks Fides "for the past ten years of collaboration during my service as National Director of the PMS in Poland. October 21 marks the end of my second term in missionary service. I wish you all the strength you need to carry out Jesus' missionary mandate with love and faith." (CE) (Agenzia Fides 10/07/2010)
