AFRICA/NIGERIA - On 50th anniversary of national independence, Pope encourages work towards peace and democracy

Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI has called on Nigerians to work diligently for the peace and prosperity of their fellow citizens as the nation celebrates the golden jubilee of her attainment of Independence. The appeal was contained in a message, personally signed by the Holy Father and delivered to President Ebele Goodluck Jonathan by Cardinal Peter Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, at the State House in Abuja, on Friday, September 30, 2010.
The Pontiff, while congratulating the President and the people of the country on the unique celebration, urged Nigerians to continue to strive for the spread of sustainable democracy and authentic human rights through wise and just legislation.
Expressing gratitude to God for the civil and political progress made by the country since attainment of independence in 1960, the Pope said: “It is gratifying to have the opportunity to encourage Your Excellency and, through you, all Nigerians to work ever more diligently for the peace and prosperity of their fellow citizens, for the continued spread of democracy and authentic human rights through wise and just legislation and for the further integral development of all, with an especial care towards the poorest and the weakest.”
Pope Benedict XVI prayed for God’s abundant blessings on the whole country assuring the president and the people of Nigeria of a special remembrance in his prayers on the auspicious occasion.
In his comment after delivering the Holy Father’s message, Cardinal Turkson, who is representing the Pope at the golden jubilee celebration, stated that Nigeria is very dear to the heart of the Holy Father and he holds the country in high esteem. He disclosed that both the Holy See and Nigeria have enjoyed a cordial diplomatic relationship since the country became Independent in 1960. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 1/10/2010)
