Wednesday, 22 September 2010

Chiang Mai (Agenzia Fides) – A group of Buddhist and Christian representatives, who met recently at the Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand highlighted the need for faith communities to engage with the government and financial institutions to work together for a fair distribution of social welfare. The theme of the meeting was "Engaging Structural Greed." The final declaration of the meeting showed that at the heart of today's global financial crisis is greed on a personal level and in terms of the whole system, and the hope is that "such ongoing interreligious engagement and cooperation can be a powerful contribution to overcoming greed and realizing a world of greater compassion, wisdom and justice." The participants included 30 leaders, scholars, economists, and activists – Lutherans, Reformed, Baptists, Anglicans, and Catholic Christians, as well as Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhists from 14 countries.
