ASIA/INDIA - Catholic Sisters from Tamil Nadu open new mission in West Bengal

Calcutta (Fides Service) - A journey from south to north across the nation in the name of faith and love for the poor and for evangelisation was undertaken by Sister Servants of the Sorrowful Mother OSM a congregation started in Tamil Nadu, in southern India. On June 23 the Sisters opened a new house and mission in the northern state of West Bengal in the small town of Sahebdanga, not far from Calcutta. Bishop Cyprian Monis, Bishop of Asansol diocese the territory on which the new mission stands, blessed the home and mission and welcomed the Sisters who had come to work in his diocese.
“We are happy to open this new mission in the 150th year since our congregation was founded”, said Sister Vitalina, OSM General Counsellor. “This is a mile stone for our order”.
The Sister Servants of the Sorrowful Mother work in the fields of medical assistance, pastoral and social work and education. “ In collaboration with the diocese we also intend to help proclaim the Gospel of Christ”, the Religious said. This first rural mission of the Sister Servants of the Sorrowful Mother is situated in the small town of Sahebdanga, where a few decades ago for a time there was a small Jesuit community. The presence of the Sister Servants of the Sorrowful Mother are a promise for the future, for spreading the Good News and improving the living conditions of these rural peoples.
