ASIA/CHINA - Young Catholics of Shan Tou diocese train for Summer Camp service

Shan Tou (Agenzia Fides) – Holy Scripture, the Sacraments, Catechism, the Liturgy, Sacred Music, were the subjects studied during the 11th Pastoral Formation Course for young people in the diocese of Shan Tou, Guangdong province in mainland China. The Course ended yesterday 16 July. Some 120 young Catholics from different parishes took part in the week long initiative which will enable them to help priests organise children's Parish Summer Camps in the respective parishes. According to information sent to Fides, the Course was led by Rev Huang Bing Zhang, parish priest at Shan Tou Cathedral and also director of the Diocesan Pastoral Formation Centre. He and other priests celebrated daily Mass for the students and were available for hearing Confessions. They also led morning and evening prayers and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for the young people. The diocese of Shan Tou, formerly a mission of the Paris Foreign Mission Society MEP, was created in 1946, the year of the institution of the Catholic hierarchy in China. Today the diocese has 130,000 Catholics, 150 parishes churches and chapels, twenty priests, forty women religious, members of the diocesan Congregation of Our Lady Queen of all Hearts.
