AMERICA/BOLIVIA - The Pope appoints National Director of the PMS auxiliary Bishop of El Alto

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Father, Benedict XVI, appointed today, 15 July, as Auxiliary Bishop of El Alto (Bolivia), Rev. Eugenio Scarpellini, of the diocesan clergy of Bergamo (Italy), assigning him the titular See of Girba. Until now Fr Scarpellini was National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Bolivia as well as PMS Coordinator for Latin America and secretary adjunct of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Bolivia. Rev Eugenio Scarpellini was born on 8 January 1954 at Verdellino (Bergamo, Italy). He studied philosophy and theology at Papa Giovanni XXIII Seminary in Bergamo (1972-1978). He was ordained a priest on 17 June 1978 for the diocese of Bergamo. On 11 January 1988 he was sent on as a fidei donum priest on mission to Bolivia. He has ministered as follows: in Bergamo assistant parish priest at Boltiere and at Nembro; in the archdiocese of La Paz , parish priest at Villa Copacabana and in Salvador; bursar and member of the financial council at the Major Seminary, Bursar General of the archdiocese and general director of Collegio Marien Garten.
