AMERICA/MEXICO - Catholic groups encourage votes for candidates who defend life and the family

Friday, 2 July 2010

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) – Through the Internet, several Catholic groups are calling on the faithful to choose candidates who respect Christian values.
Several Catholic organizations are using the Internet to promote the selection of candidates with clear positions in defense of life, marriage, and the family, and to exclude those politicians who promote the adoption of laws that go against Christian values.
In light of elections on July 4th, to choose 12 governors of several states, Catholics should inquire about the positions of candidates and not only vote for a simple political affiliation, voting habits, or family tradition, says the site www.votocatolico.com
Among the recommendations for Catholics at the time of voting, they note the importance of voting for candidates that promote justice, development, and distribution of wealth in a practical and realistic manner.
They remind believers that they should choose candidates who respect their Catholic roots, promoting a healthy coexistence and cooperation between Church and State, and those who care about promoting virtue.
The website, promoted by an independent body, reminds people not to be deceived by the personality or the "media power" of a candidate, as it could lead to the choice of candidates that promote the creation of laws that are contrary to the basic Christian principles. The site also warns against being fooled by candidates who claim to be Catholic just to gain votes and then support laws that go against moral principles.
They should also promote legislation to protect young people, the poor and marginalized, cultural values, education, employment, social justice, and love for the homeland. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 02/07/2010)
