AMERICA/ARGENTINA - “Making room for dialogue means increasing options for the poor,” Final Declaration from Social Week in Mar del Plata

Monday, 28 June 2010

Mar del Plata (Agenzia Fides) – "For us, as disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ, the great cause of social justice and social inclusion is fundamental mission, the central axis of the Pastoral Ministry." These were the words of Bishop Jorge Casaretto of San Isidro, President of the Episcopal Commission for Social-Pastoral Ministry (CEPAS) at the conclusion of the "Social Week," held in Mar del Plata June 25 to 27, with the aim of working to eradicate poverty and promote integral development. The aims coincide with those announced in celebration of the "Bicentenary 2010-2016," a period of time in which several Latin American countries celebrate 200 years of independence from Spain.
"We believe that the leaders of the Bicentennial will be those who will put as a priority an intense mysticism of service, a creative passion for the common good, and a deep commitment to dialogue," said the Episcopal Commission for Pastoral Social, in the final declaration of the “Social Week,” which was attended by over 700 social leaders, politicians, union leaders, and business managers.
The final text which was sent to Fides was presented by the Bishops' Commission that is chaired by Bishop Jorge Casaretto. The text reads: "Contemplating the full dignity of every person and all people helps us to replace the style of fragmentation with the spirit of brotherhood."
The text stresses the unity which must exist in Argentina: "Unity as a national community is the best way towards integral development and equitable distribution of property. Making room for dialogue and promoting a culture of encounter also means deepening in our work for the poor and development in Argentina. The text continues: "We need new structures to facilitate constructive dialogue for the necessary social consensus. In order to eradicate poverty and exclusion, we need to promote a genuine agreement among all regarding public policies on integral development."
Finally, the text recalls an important moment in this process of social engagement: the First National Congress of the Social Doctrine of the Church, which will be held in the Archdiocese of Rosario in May 2011. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 28/06/2010)
