AFRICA/KENYA - Serious outbreak of cholera in various parts of the country

Friday, 25 June 2010

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) – The Kenyan Ministry of Health has announced that a serious outbreak of cholera in areas of Nairobi, the Rift Valley and the coastal is propagated by a scarcity of hygiene and sanitation and the use of dirty water. In the past week seven people died of cholera; four in East Pokot and three in Kaloleni (Coastal Province). "The people in Kaloleni drink water from stagnant pools; so do the people in East Pokot where there is a scarcity of hygiene and sanitation. The only toilet for these nomad herdsmen is the bush. They have no access to water or taps. Cholera has spread since January to 31 districts, with 3,024 registered cases, 53 of them mortal. (AP) (25/6/2010 Agenzia Fides)
