Kibungo (Agenzia Fides) - Work on a Ndamira-Ngoma water pipeline in Kibungo has been completed. In just one year the Movement to Fight Hunger in the World together with the local community, built 6.6km long water pipeline with 7 public taps, which was opened a few weeks ago and provides daily water (about 20 litres) to about 700 families. A report sent to Fides says the project has given a permanent job to 150 people, plus 11 members of the water management committee charged with consumption regulation. Among the people, 20 built a home, 5 purchased a cow for milk, 5 paid a dowry in order to marry and 10 purchased a bicycle.
So far 30,000 water cans have been filled. In terms of development this means: health, hygiene, agricultural development, better livestock and for the youngest members of the family whose job it is to fetch water, more time for learning and playing. Moreover water will soon be provided to people living in the hills around Byumba. After two years of searching for water sources, digging and building, water is being pumped from a depth of 1,950 mt. : 4 litres of clean water every second. The most complex part of the project completed, work has started on taps and digging trenches in which to lay pipes which, thanks to gravity, will supply ' blue oil' to the surrounding hillside villages.
