Rome (Agenzia Fides) – Representatives of the National Transition Committee (CNT, the Interim Parliament) and the main political parties signed an agreement to build a democratic future for the country and put an end to a period of uncertainty and violence. This is what was stated in a communique sent to Fides.
Twenty-two political representatives of Guinea met at the Community of Sant'Egidio in Rome, to discuss the transition and the future of their country and prepare for the next elections, during a week of intense work.
Among them were the Vice-President of the CNT, the Director of Political Affairs of the CNT, and the President of the CNT Commission for Reconciliation.
Guinea is struggling out of the current situation following the coup of December 2008. After a year of military rule and a long period of political uncertainty, with clashes and casualties, the political and social forces, united in the CNT, sign an agreement laying the foundations for a peaceful transition and the return to democratic life in the country.
The agreement provides for power sharing institutions, parliament, constitution of a government of broad alliances, the creation of a national council of reconciliation. The parties undertake to maintain and promote a peaceful and refuse every recourse to ethnic hatred, violence, and propaganda which would create tension. The parties also agree to ensure fair and transparent elections and to accept the results. There is a planned restructuring of the armed forces, the compensation of victims of violations, as well as a framework for permanent dialogue and consultation.
May 28 is the scheduled date for the signing of the Pact of Rome, which provides guarantees to the opposition parties during the 6 months' period between the presidential and legislative elections. (LM) (Agenzia Fides 05/27/2010)
