VATICAN - Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Itinerant Peoples: “Pastoral Ministry of Mobility Today, in the Context of Corresponsibility Among States and International Organizations”

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – May 26-28, the headquarters of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Itinerant Peoples (Piazza San Calisto, Vatican City) will host the XIX Plenary Assembly of the Dicastery. It will be attended by its 23 members (Cardinals, Archbishops, and Bishops) from various countries, along with 10 Consultants, also from various nationalities, as well as specialists in the material in the various sectors of human mobility entrusted to the care of the Pontifical Council. The theme of the Plenary is “Pastoral Ministry of Mobility Today, in the Context of Corresponsibility Among States and International Organizations.” As a statement sent to Fides explains, there is no doubt that human mobility, a sign of the times, today requires a multilateral approach, which favors the specific contribution of the States and international organizations in the process of acknowledging the international instruments that exist in order to combat various forms of discrimination, racism, xenophobia and intolerance, on the one hand, and on the other, the cooperation of all in developing programs that safeguard the dignity and centrality of the human person. The sessions will be opened by the President of the Pontifical Council, Archbishop Antonio Maria Veglio, who will present the theme, based on the most recent publications of the Dicastery, in order to recall the pastoral indications that have emerged in the various environments in which it carries out its mission. Then, Secretary Archbishop Agostino Marchetto will present “The Thought, Work, and Changes of the Pontifical Council Since the Last Plenary Assembly,” which took place two years ago. This will be followed by talks given by experts in the material being highlighted at the session. In conclusion, the Plenary will be received in audience by the Holy Father Benedict XVI on May 28.
