AFRICA/KENYA - Reconciling profession and faith: Kenya Movement of Catholic Professionals launched in Eldoret

Friday, 14 May 2010

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) – The Kenya Movement for Catholic Professionals has been launched in Eldoret in the Rift Valley Province. Eldoret, located in western Kenya, is an important business, industrial, and agricultural headquarters.
According to a report from the CISA Agency headquartered in Nairobi, during a meeting held in the Diocese of Eldoret, Bishop Cornelius Korir exhorted the professionals to be Catholic Christians first, then professionals. The bishop told the professionals that faith should precede their professions, so that when they are confronted with matters that bring their faith and professions into conflict, their faith supersedes.
The one day forum organized by the national office of the Kenya Movement of Catholic Professionals deliberated among other things; the role of Catholic Professionals in the diocese, the human rights issues in Eldoret that the professionals can address and the challenges and strengths of living as a Catholic professional in Eldoret.
The participants were also given a background of the Movement and information on the Second Synod for Africa with regard to lay professionals in the Church. In addition, the participants were taken through the process of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) conducted by the United Nations Human Rights Council. The Kenya Movement of Catholic Professionals plays a role in the review by submitting reports on the human rights situation on the ground. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 14/5/2010)
