VATICAN - May 17-21: Annual General Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS)

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – With a welcome greeting and a summary report from Archbishop Piergiuseppe Vacchelli, Secretary Adjunct of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), Monday, May 17, will mark the opening of proceedings for the Annual General Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies. In the Salesian Retreat House, on Via della Pisana in Rome, which will host the meeting, the PMS National Directors from every continent will come together to meet with the President and the Secretaries General of the PMS.
After the formalities required by the statutes (including the presentation of the new National Directors, who earlier in the day attended a course specially designed for them), the Assembly will hear the report from the Secretary General of the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which will be followed by meetings in groups. On the afternoon of Monday, May 17, there is a scheduled talk from Cardinal Ivan Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, and presentation of group projects. Tuesday, May 18, they will discuss the reports of the other three Pontifical Mission Societies: St. Peter the Apostle, Holy Childhood, and the Missionary Union, followed by group work.
Wednesday, May 19 will open the second part of the Assembly on financial statements for 2009 and the foreseen balance for 2010, and examination of applications for grants that have been received. On the afternoon of Thursday, May 20, there will be a meeting of National Directors on a continental level.
The last day of work, Friday, May 21, participants will travel to the General Assembly in St. Peter's Basilica for the celebration of Holy Mass, which will be followed by an audience with Pope Benedict XVI. In the afternoon, there will be the closure of the Assembly, with the approval of the budgets and final projects and a talk from the President of the PMS, Archbishop Vacchelli.
