Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) – The National Conference of Catholic Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) is preparing its 48th General Assembly that will bring together over 300 bishops of the country, May 4 to 13, in Brasilia. The theme is "Disciples and Servants of the Word of God and the Church's Mission in the World." The aim is to reflect on the Church in Brazil and the everyday problems experienced by the Brazilian people. Besides the central theme, other priority issues that will be discussed in the assembly include: the Ecclesial Base Communities (CEB), the general guidelines of the Church in Brazil (DGAE), and the Continental Mission, the agrarian question in the country, and the Centenary of the Ecumenical Movement.
About 400 people are expected to attend, including guests, Executive Secretaries of the regional leadership of the Bishops' Conference, and advisors and representatives of organizations linked to the Bishops' Conference. Each day there will be a press conference attended by three bishops. The spokesman for this meeting will be the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, Archbishop Orani João Tempesta.
The event is always held in the district of Itaici, in the city of Indaiatuba, in São Paulo, but this year it has moved to the capital because of the 16th National Eucharistic Congress, which will take place there from May 13 to 16. According to news of the Bishops' Conference, starting next year, the General Assembly will be held in North Aparecida, in São Paulo, home of the National Basilica of Aparecida.
