AFRICA/MALAWI - Bishops of Malawi work for equal opportunities for men and women

Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) – "Women have the right to equal opportunities in education, training, employment, remuneration, inheritance and owning property," says a note from the Bishops' Conference of Malawi, reported by the CISA in Nairobi at the opening of a conference in Malawi on the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
The bishops note that women are often denied participation in decision-making in the family, the Church and society.
The Secretary General of the Bishops' Conference, Fr. George Buleya, said, “Gender equality is a justice issue not an issue of charity. We should all remember that before works of charity are the demands of Justice.”
Recognizing the dignity of women will mean increasing their social, political, economic and spiritual strength both individually and collectively as well as removing the obstacles that penalize women and prevent them from fully integrating themselves into various sections of society. Any form of discrimination against women degrades the dignity conferred on them by God, the bishops conclude. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 22/3/2010)
