AMERICA/HAITI - Count continues for those who fled Haitian capital following earthquake

Thursday, 11 March 2010

Port-au-Prince (Agenzia Fides) – Fides has received a copy of the first results from the campaign for the registration of those who left Haiti's capital after the earthquake, from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The campaign seeks to register displaced and/or migrated Haitians following the earthquake on January 12, who are now located in several clusters around Port-au-Prince, to provide them with secure housing before the rainy season.
The IOM, coordinator of international efforts to support this initiative organized by the government, is responsible for conducting operations, while working with other groups. The objective of this initiative is to determine the place of origin of the largest populations residing in settlements that were created after the earthquake and to study future options, such as a return to their home, providing assistance to host families, improved living conditions in temporary settlements, and the planning and creation of new places of residence.
The processing of the information collected after the first port of registration of mass has been completed, showing a total of 4,943 families at the Champ de Mars, a camp near the destroyed Haitian presidential palace. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has 8,000 registered families in the Golf Club of Petionville, and last week, the IOM completed the registration of 9,348 families in the old military airport in the capital.
It is expected that the first camp organized by IOM will open on March 13 and will house 200 families in tents donated by the Colombian government. It is a joint project of the organizations of civil protection in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The aid agency Oxfam will provide water and sanitation. The IOM is an intergovernmental organization founded in 1951, which operates on the principle that the phenomenon of migration, in human conditions and in an orderly manner, benefits migrants and society.
