AFRICA/KENYA - Catholic children show solidarity towards Haitian children

Monday, 1 March 2010

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) – On February 20, about 20,000 Catholic children gathered at Saint Mary's Playground in Nairobi to celebrate the Day of the Holy Childhood Association (HCA). As a sign of solidarity with the Haitian children affected by the earthquake that devastated their country, the African children offered prayers and economic aid. The groups, from the parishes of the Archdiocese of Nairobi, were received by Cardinal John Njue, Archbishop of Nairobi, who came with their savings, collected in plastic containers, for a total of 60,725 (Kenyan shillings) in addition to food that they offered during the Mass at the Maisha Bora Children's Home in Karen. Father Celestino Bundi, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), has announced that the money collected will be sent to Haitian children through the Nunciature in Nairobi. In his homily, Cardinal John Njue prayed and thanked the children for the gesture, pointing out how the modern world needs to increase this spirit of generosity. "Nobody is so poor that they cannot give or share with those in need. We do not have to be rich in order to give. What matters is how you do it," said the Cardinal. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 1/3/2010)
