AFRICA/KENYA - “Justice, Peace, and Reconciliation” in Africa: the key role of the woman

Saturday, 23 January 2010

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) – Women have been called to help the Church to build peace and reconciliation in families. "Your importance in the family makes you the most qualified people in the peace process and in promoting reconciliation at the family level, which is why the Church should take advantage of this gift," said Father Michael Czerny during the annual meeting for women "artisans of peace", held in Nairobi at the Kenya Association of Sisterhoods (AOSK) association created in 1962 and that brings together more than a hundred religious congregations engaged in the African country.
Fr. Michael Czerny, a Jesuit, is the Coordinator of the African Jesuit AIDS Network (AJAN), which is in Kangemi, on the outskirts of Nairobi, and was also auditor at the Second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa held in Rome in October 2009. During the AOSK general meeting he gave a talk on the topic: "The Synod for Africa and its implications for the Church in Africa." "Our [Synod] Fathers have done much for the process of building peace and reconciliation - said Father Czerny -, however the actual implementation will depend on the contributions of many members of the Church, including women."
Stressing that the Church in Africa will have to "change" some of its existing facilities so as to make proper changes, Fr. Czerny pointed out that some of the existing programs offered by women could be used to solve many problems presented at the Synod. This annual general meeting, dedicated to "Justice, Peace, and Reconciliation" brought together more than 40 women, religious and laity, from the various dioceses of Kenya.
