Wednesday, 20 January 2010

Auki (Agenzia Fides) – It has been 25 years since the Diocese of Auki, in February 1984, was erected. Since then, the Catholic community grew in numbers, making strides in faith formation, in vocations, and in the maturity of the laity. This is what Agenzia Fides was told by the Church in the Solomon Islands, as they told of their Jubilee celebration which started during the Year for Priests. In recent months, the diocesan community of Auki, led by Archbishop Christophe Cardone, also received the visit of the Apostolic Nuncio in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, Archbishop Francisco Montecillo Padilla, who celebrated Mass and encouraged community members to "go forward in the journey of faith, proclaiming the Kingdom of God."
On a pastoral level, the Catholic community works through youth groups, in the service of education in 4 Catholic institutions and in social work.
Out of a population of 155,000 inhabitants, the diocese has 39,000 Catholic faithful, 16 priests, 9 religious men and 13 religious women. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 20/01/2010)
