Tuesday, 29 December 2009

Rome (Agenzia Fides) – In an effort to promote and support the welfare of the population in the districts of Gicumbi and Gatsibo, Rwanda, through integrated interventions in health, hygiene, habitat, environment, education, comes the specific objective of the new initiative of the Movement for the Struggle Against World Hunger. The project is located in the District of Gicumbi, in the province of North Rwanda. The areas are health, preventive health, family and environment. Interventions will be geared towards two areas. The first is the action of a pumping station capable of powering the aqueduct Nyamabuye taking advantage of natural energy brought by the cascades of Mubuga, which will benefit 22,000 people through the 43 fountains that will be installed. The second concerns the rehabilitation and upgrading of the distribution network of the aqueduct of Gisiza that will bring water to another 6,000 people through the installation of 19 fountains. Technical assistance will be accompanied by raising awareness and hygiene education, on the proper use of water resources and environmental protection for the population itself, which will thus contribute to the implementation of the project.
This project aims in particular to the reduction of disease caused by the use of non-potable water (worms, cholera, dysentery, etc..), the increased rate of schooling and literacy, the implementation of local capacity for the management of water resources, operation of a pumping station, and upgrading of the water distribution network.
