La Paz (Agenzia Fides) – On the occasion of the presidential election held Sunday, December 6 (see Fides 26/11/2009, 05/12/2009), the Bishops of Bolivia, through the Secretary General of the Conference of Bishops, addressed a letter to their re-elected President. "After learning the results of the election process, we expressed our sincere congratulations to President of the State of Bolivia, Mr. Evo Morales Ayma, for his re-election, and wish for this new phase of his administration every success in the service of all Bolivians and particularly the most needy,” begins the letter of the Bishops, who add: "We also congratulate our people of Bolivia, who exercised their duty and the right to vote peacefully and responsibly, demonstrating once again their profound democratic vocation.” The wide participation is regarded as a "desire to seek durable solutions through dialogue and consensus, with the collaboration of all sectors and institutions of society, including minorities."
The Bishops also renewed the willingness to cooperate in the promotion of the needy: "In the mutual respect of autonomy and on the basis of enduring principles of the social doctrine of the Church, such as human dignity, subsidiarity, the common good, and solidarity, we reaffirm Mr. President of our willingness to cooperate in the service of personal and social vocation of all the inhabitants of our country, with particular attention to the poorest." The letter ends by saying: "May the Lord of Life and History enlighten the new government and guide our beloved country on the road to prosperity, justice, brotherhood, and peace.
